Acadia National Parkis anational parklocated in the U.S. state ofMaine. It reserves much ofMount Desert Island, and associated smaller islands, off theAtlantic coast. Initially created as theSieur de Monts National Monumentin 1916, the park was renamedLafayette National Parkin 1919,and was given its current name of Acadia in 1929.The oldest American national park east of theMississippi River,its landscape is marked by woodland, rocky beaches and glacier-scoured granite peaks such as Cadillac Mountain, the highest point on the United States’ East Coast.The bayside town of Bar Harbor, with restaurants and shops, is a popular gateway.
